The GAO hearing on for-profit education before congress on Wednesday will surely lead to stricter regulations across the board, and rightfully so. There will be additional scrutiny on this industry that will separate the wheat from the chaff. An example of this is that yesterday Senator Richard Durbin and Senator Jim Webb sent a letter to the Department of Defense and to the Department of Veteran Affairs inquiring how education benefits for veterans are being spent.
The bloodbath will continue for the foreseeable future. Although I am a proponent of for-profit education, it is time for changes. The welfare of students, and not shareholders, is at stake.
