I will be heading to Jacksonville, Florida this weekend for the Gator Bowl where the University of Virginia will play Texas Tech.  Of course, since I am a UVA fan and a self proclaimed “student of the game”, I am somewhat concerned about Texas Tech’s high powered passing game and our inability to stop the pass but we will just have to wait and see what surprises we can pull out of our bag of tricks.

I will be driving to Jacksonville and had this thought as it relates to the trip and an adult learner’s goal or new year’s resolution to go back to school.   No doubt that making the sacrifice to return to school and possibly do so through an online programs is a significant goal.   A goal like this needs to be broken down into multiple steps.  It’s like the “road trip” I am about to go on.  I can’t just jump over states.  I have to pass through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia before I hit the Florida border.  Remember — it’s easy to say you are going back to school, it’s difficult to stick to it.

Here are a few more tips on how to “stick” to your resolution about earning your degree:

1.  Start with the basics — Why don’t you begin with something that is attainable like filling out an application or two, getting your previous transcripts evaluated, or filling out financial aid paperwork?

2.  Give yourself a reward — Set specific milestones and, if you hit them,  plan to give yourself some type of reward.

3.  Let others know — Accountability is key!

4.  Don’t give up — Set a plan and even if you stumble along the way don’t ever give up.

5.  Enjoy the journey — What you are embarking on will make you better.  Along the way, don’t forget to smile, have some fun, and enjoy what you are learning.

In the movie City Slickers, Billy Crystal plays a radio advertising salesman going through a mid-life crisis. He and his friends deal with the humdrumness of life by participating in a cattle drive from New Mexico to Colorado — an experience that turns out to be a kind of epiphany for all of them. At the end of the movie as they prepare to return to New York and the familiar routine, Billy Crystal explains to one of those friends the concept of a “do-over.” Do you remember, he says, when you used to play ball as a kid? Sometimes when you fouled things up, you would get a “do-over.”  Simply, it was a second chance to swing at the pitch.

The online student’s “window” into the virtual classroom is through a school’s learning management system (LMS) or E-learning platform.  This platform and its features, functionlity, and ease of use (or lack thereof) really makes or breaks the experience of an online learner.  You see, the E-learning platform is the classroom, professor’s office, study hall, administrative offices all rolled into one.  That’s why it is important if you are considering enrolling for online studies that you carefully research and ask intelligent questions about a school’s virtual classroom and LMS.
